Don't limit yourself to looking for the airports nearest to your current location and destination while looking for unsold airline tickets. Rather, expand your search to include airports in the area. Before you take off and after you land, decide how far you're willing to travel. Then, add any airports that are within that radius in your search results.

For instance, you might assume that one particular airport is the best choice if you're going to a particular destination, but occasionally other airports are less expensive. Check the costs of tickets at the other airports as well, as the one nearest to your final destination might not be the cheapest.

If you are traveling to a less expensive airport that may be farther away, there could be some cons that you should not forget. If you are going on a less expensive trip that lands at a less convenient airport, it will probably take longer to get from the airport to your hotel or workplace. Looking for one-way flights rather than round-trip is an extra choice. For domestic flights at least, most airlines set their prices this way. Having to pay for luggage on multiple airlines could be one of the problems. For instance, you would have to pay for both your checked and carry-on bags on the second leg if you took a Southwest one-way flight (which permits two checked bags per passenger on all flights) and a Spirit Airlines on the return trip. Therefore, be mindful that airline baggage regulations vary, sometimes significantly.

Look for Separate Reservations While Group Traveling

Even if you're flying in a group of two or more, looking for individual tickets is another way to perhaps save money on last-minute flights (or any flights, for that matter). Sometimes, if there is just one seat available at that price, you can find a cheaper one.

However, it will only be visible if you look for single seats. The less expensive single seat won't appear if you search for flights for two or more people. When looking for seats for one person rather than a family of four, there may be more affordable flights available.

If a single seat on a flight is less expensive, book it first, then return to book the remaining seats separately. At least one ticket might be reasonably priced as a result. But since you made separate reservations, be aware that you most likely won't be sitting together.
